Shetland race 2017 round-up

It has been a few months since we completed the Shetland race 2017 and I never got past downloading the photos from my phone.

So time for the rounds-up. As mentioned in a previous post, we started at 10am on the 21st June and arrived 2 days later in Shetland – a long race, which was mainly due to 12 hours of no wind at the start. We split into 2 man, 3 hour watches for the duration. but we all came together a couple of hours before we finished to come across the finishing line.

We were the 18th yacht to arrive (including the committee yacht) but due to handicapping and an interpretation of the rules that we did not agree with, we actually finished 22nd.

I have to say, that Sailing with Morten, Aksel and Stein Arna was a one of the best experiences I have had and I can now say that I have ticked off “compete in an Ocean Race” off my bucket list.

Here are some more photos of our leg of the race:

We had (rest of) Friday to relax in Lerwick and I had a nice walk around the town and visited the sights including the VERY interesting museum and Archives. The town really is quite nice and there is quite a bit of walking involved.

I managed to buy some bits and bobs for my niece and nephew, but nothing yet for the kids or linda –

I needed to try harder tomorrow morning.

We had a late fish and chip lunch and then went to the prize giving for Leg 1.

The prize giving was a great occasion and we were entertained with a sax quartet and wine before the start of the main event which did involve as much wine or beer as you could want.

We were told at this point that we would not be starting the race back until Sunday some time as the weather report was horrendous for Saturday afternoon and it would not be safe.

As we were leaving the local cinema which is located at the same place as the prize giving was advertising the films on that day which included the new Transformers movie as well as Whiskey Galore! which I felt was surprisingly apt when a load of Norwegians were there…

We then had relaxing pub crawl back to Lerwick yacht club for a nightcap.

I know I said this would be a round up – but time and length of post means i’ll have to split this over two!
